     Assist the Excimer Laser Technician with pre-op, surgical and post-op care of refractive surgery patients to include autorefraction and auto keratometry, interpreting refraction with both automated and manual phoropters, basic ocular motility tests and pupil exam, ophthalmic photograph and flourescein angiography, glare testing, wave front testing and analysis, goldman tonometry, puilometry, excimer laser with wave front guided ablation, and assisting during refractive surgery.

    Obtain medical and personal data for patients for conditions including ocular examination; arrange for laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies and patient admissions and surgery as requested by the physician. Alleviate patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and referring specific questions to the doctor.

    Decontaminate, clean and prepare surgical instruments for sterilization by the hospitals Sterile Processing Department.  Assist with minor office surgery, laser treatments, and main operating room surgery as required.


    • Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate
    • Possess and maintain current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, or a Certified Ophthalmic Technician or a Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology or a formal ophthalmic training program of the United Stated Armed Forces.
    • Undergo ocular examination to establish baseline ocular function as appropriate to the occupational laser risk associated with the position.
    • Two years of experience within the past three years assisting with refractive surgeries including PRK and LASIK procedures, patient selection, and care of corneal refractive surgery patients.
    • Certification for operation of the VISX Star S4 Excimer Laser used in the Ophthalmology Department.
    • Possess a basic knowledge of ocular physiology, anatomy, pathology, optics, refraction and contact lens principles.
    • Will be required to submit letters of recommendation.
